About
Founded in 2002, Today Art Museum (TAM) holds the distinction of being China’s first non-profit private art museum. Situated in the Baiziwan area, it occupies an old boiler room that was masterfully converted by architect Wang Hui into a landmark of contemporary culture. TAM is particularly noted for its forward-thinking approach to the "Museum 2.0" concept, exploring the integration of digital technology, VR, and AI into the visitor experience, while maintaining a rigorous commitment to academic research and public art education.

Reality Surreality: Major Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Painting
April 14 – June 1, 2026

The exhibition “Reality Surreality: Major Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Painting” opened on April 14, 2026, at Building No.2 of the Today Art Museum. Co-organized by Today Art Museum and the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art & Urban Planning, and curated by art historian Lü Peng, the exhibition revisits the development of Chinese surrealist painting over the past four decades.

Against a backdrop of shifting cultural contexts and evolving visual experiences shaped by technologies of today, the exhibition explores how artists have used surrealist language to break through constraints, respond to their times, and construct new visual realities.

Bringing together over 60 works by around 50 leading Chinese contemporary artists, the exhibition spans generations and artistic styles, offering a comprehensive view of the visual language and conceptual core of “New Surrealism” in China. Structured into two sections—“1980–2005” and “2005–Present”—it traces the localized transformation of surrealist painting in China.
